Tig Notaro

Tig Notaro, born Mathilde O'Callaghan Notaro on March 24, 1971, in Jackson, Mississippi, is an American stand-up comedian, writer, radio contributor, and actress known for her deadpan humor and resilience in the face of adversity.

Notaro grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, before moving to Spring, Texas. She struggled academically, failing multiple grades before ultimately dropping out of high school. In 1990, she earned her GED while living in Texas. Her nickname, "Tig," was given to her by her older brother, Renaud Notaro, a radio talk show host.

Notaro initially worked in the music industry, managing bands under the name Tignation Promotions in Denver, Colorado. Her work eventually led her to Los Angeles, where she tried stand-up comedy for the first time in the late 1990s. She quickly gained recognition for her dry, observational humor and was featured on Comedy Central Presents and The Sarah Silverman Program.

In 2011, Notaro released her debut stand-up album, Good One. However, it was her 2012 performance at Largo in Los Angeles that became legendary. Just days after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she delivered a raw, deeply personal set that was widely praised. The recording, titled Live, was released later that year and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.

Notaro was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in July 2012 and underwent a double mastectomy without reconstructive surgery. She opted out of chemotherapy but continued treatment with hormone-blocking therapy. By 2016, she was declared cancer-free.

Notaro has appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including Transparent, Star Trek: Discovery, Instant Family, and Army of the Dead. She also created and starred in the semi-autobiographical Amazon series One Mississippi, which ran from 2016 to 2017.

Notaro married Stephanie Allynne, an actress and writer, in 2015. The couple has twin sons, Finn and Max, born via surrogate in 2016.
