Roxann Dawson, born September 11, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, is an
American actress, director, producer, and writer best known for portraying
B'Elanna Torres, the half-Klingon engineer, in Star Trek: Voyager. She has since
built a successful career as a television director, working on Agents of
S.H.I.E.L.D., The Mentalist, and Foundation.
Dawson studied at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1980.
She began her career in theater, performing in A Chorus Line on Broadway before
transitioning to television. Her early roles included appearances in Matlock,
Baywatch, The Untouchables, and The Lyon’s Den.
In 1994, Dawson was cast as B'Elanna Torres, a main character in Voyager,
appearing in all seven seasons. She later directed episodes of Star Trek:
Enterprise, making her directorial debut with Riddles (1999). She has since
directed episodes of Heroes, Lost, The Good Wife, Scandal, and The Deuce. In
2019, she directed the feature film Breakthrough.
Beyond acting and directing, Dawson has written science fiction novels,
including the Tenebrae trilogy. She has been married twice—to Casey Biggs
(1985–1987) and Eric Dawson (1994–present). She has two children.
