Majel Roddenberry

     Majel Barrett Roddenberry, born February 23, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, was an American actress and producer best known for her extensive contributions to Star Trek. She was often called "The First Lady of Star Trek" due to her involvement in every Star Trek series during her lifetime.

     Barrett studied at the University of Miami before pursuing acting. She appeared in Leave It to Beaver, Bonanza, and The Lucy Show before working with Gene Roddenberry on The Lieutenant. She played Number One, the first officer of the USS Enterprise, in Star Trek’s original pilot, The Cage (1964), but was removed from the role due to network concerns. She later portrayed Nurse Christine Chapel in Star Trek: The Original Series and Lwaxana Troi in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. She also voiced the computer in multiple Star Trek series and films.

     Barrett married Gene Roddenberry in 1969, and they had one son, Rod Roddenberry. After Gene’s passing in 1991, she continued to promote Star Trek and produced Earth: Final Conflict. She passed away on December 18, 2008, at age 76.
