Kirstie Alley was an American actress, born Kirstie Louise Alley on January 12,
1951, in Wichita, Kansas. She gained fame for her role as Rebecca Howe on the
hit sitcom Cheers (1987–1993), which earned her an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe
in 1991. She later starred in Veronica’s Closet (1997–2000) and appeared in
films such as Look Who’s Talking (1989) and its sequels, Summer School (1987),
Shoot to Kill (1988), Village of the Damned (1995), and Drop Dead Gorgeous
(1999).
In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
(1982), Alley played Lieutenant Saavik, a Vulcan Starfleet officer and protégé
of Captain Spock. Her character was introduced as a promising young officer
aboard the USS Enterprise, assisting in the battle against Khan Noonien Singh.
Alley’s portrayal of Saavik was well-received, but she did not return for Star
Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), with Robin Curtis taking over the role.
Beyond acting, Alley was known for her work in
reality television, starring in Kirstie Alley’s Big Life (2010) and competing on
Dancing with the Stars (2011–2012) and Celebrity Big Brother (2018). She was
also a vocal advocate for Scientology and publicly discussed her personal
struggles, including overcoming cocaine addiction.
Alley passed away on December 5, 2022, at the age of 71, due to colon cancer.
