Karl-Heinz Urban, born on June 7, 1972, in Wellington, New Zealand, is a New
Zealand actor known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Dredd,
and The Boys.
Urban developed an early interest
in acting, influenced by his mother, who worked in the film industry. His first
acting role came at age eight in the television series Pioneer Woman. He
attended Wellington College and later enrolled at Victoria University of
Wellington, but left after a year to pursue acting.
His career began with appearances in New Zealand films and television series,
including Xena: Warrior Princess. His first Hollywood role was in Ghost Ship
(2002), followed by his portrayal of Éomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two
Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). He later starred as Vaako in
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and
Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012).
Urban gained
further recognition as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in Star Trek (2009), Star Trek
Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). He also played Skurge in
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and currently stars as Billy Butcher in The Boys
(2019–present).
Urban was married to Natalie
Wihongi from 2004 to 2014, and they have two children. He enjoys horseback
riding, a skill he showcased in The Chronicles of Riddick.
