John Noble is an Australian actor, voice actor, and theatre director born on
August 20, 1948, in Port Pirie, South Australia. He is best known for his roles
as Denethor in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and Dr. Walter Bishop in the
Fox sci-fi series Fringe.
He began his career in
theatre, serving as the artistic director of the Stage Company of South
Australia for a decade. He directed over 80 plays, including Sons of Cain on
London's West End. His film debut came in The Dreaming (1988), and he later
gained international recognition for his portrayal of Denethor in The Lord of
the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).
On
television, Noble starred in Fringe (2008–2013), earning critical acclaim for
his performance. He also appeared in 24, Sleepy Hollow, and Elementary, where he
played Morland Holmes, Sherlock Holmes' father.
As a voice actor, he has lent his voice to Unicron in Transformers: Prime,
Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight, and The Diviner in Star Trek: Prodigy. In
2024, he reprised his Star Trek role as an alternate version of The Diviner
called Ilthuran.
