Jeffrey Combs, born September 9, 1954, in Oxnard, California, is an American
actor best known for his roles in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek:
Enterprise, and the Re-Animator film series. He has also been a prominent figure
in horror and science fiction, appearing in numerous films and television
series.
Combs grew up in Lompoc, California, as
the fifth of nine children. He studied acting at the Pacific Conservatory of the
Performing Arts and later attended the University of Washington’s Professional
Actor Training Program. After performing in regional theater, he moved to Los
Angeles in 1980, where he began his film career.
His breakout role came in 1985 when he starred as Dr. Herbert West in
Re-Animator, a cult horror film based on H.P. Lovecraft’s work. He reprised the
role in Bride of Re-Animator (1990) and Beyond Re-Animator (2003). He also
appeared in The Frighteners (1996), House on Haunted Hill (1999), and I Still
Know What You Did Last Summer (1998).
In Star
Trek, Combs played multiple characters, including Weyoun, the Vorta diplomat,
and Brunt, the Ferengi Liquidator, in Deep Space Nine. He later portrayed
Thy’lek Shran, the Andorian commander, in Enterprise. His ability to play
distinct roles made him a fan favorite.
Beyond
Star Trek, Combs voiced The Question in Justice League Unlimited and Ratchet in
Transformers: Prime. He has also performed in theater, including Macbeth and The
Merchant of Venice.
Combs has been married to
Alice Cadogan, and they have one child.
