James Montgomery Doohan, born March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada, was a Canadian actor best known for portraying Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
in Star Trek: The Original Series. His career spanned over five decades, and he
was also a World War II veteran.
Doohan grew up
in Sarnia, Ontario, where he excelled in mathematics and science. In 1939, he
enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery and served in World War II,
participating in the D-Day invasion at Juno Beach. He was wounded by friendly
fire, losing a finger, but continued serving as a pilot and artillery officer.
After the war, Doohan pursued acting, studying at
the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He became a
prolific radio and television actor, appearing in The Twilight Zone, Bonanza,
and Gunsmoke. In 1966, he was cast as Scotty, the chief engineer of the USS
Enterprise, a role that made him an icon. He reprised the character in seven
Star Trek films and contributed to the development of the Klingon and Vulcan
languages.
Beyond Star Trek, Doohan appeared in
The Bold and the Beautiful, MacGyver, and Knight Rider. He was married three
times and had seven children, including Chris Doohan, who later portrayed Scotty
in Star Trek Continues. He passed away on July 20, 2005, at age 85, due to
pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.
