F. Murray Abraham was born on October 24, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and
grew up in El Paso, Texas. His father, Fahrid "Fred" Abraham, was a Syrian
immigrant, and his mother, Josephine Stello, was of Italian descent. He studied
theater at the University of Texas at El Paso and later at the University of
Texas at Austin, where he honed his acting skills before moving to New York City
to pursue a career in theater.
Abraham gained
widespread recognition for his portrayal of Antonio Salieri in Amadeus (1984), a
role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His performance as the
jealous composer opposite Tom Hulce’s Mozart remains one of the most celebrated
in film history. He continued to take on diverse roles in films such as Scarface
(1983), The Name of the Rose (1986), Finding Forrester (2000), and The Grand
Budapest Hotel (2014).
In the Star Trek
universe, Abraham played Ru’afo, the primary antagonist in Star Trek:
Insurrection (1998). Ru’afo was a Son’a leader obsessed with rejuvenation
technology.
Beyond film, Abraham has had a
prolific television career, appearing in Homeland (2012–2018), Mythic Quest
(2020–2021), Moon Knight (2022), and The White Lotus (2022), earning multiple
award nominations. His deep, commanding voice has also made him a sought-after
voice actor in animated films and video games.
Abraham
has been married to Kate Hannan since 1962, and they have two children.
