Diana Muldaur, born August 19, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American
actress best known for her roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation, L.A. Law,
and McCloud. She has had a long and varied career in television, film, and
theater.
Muldaur grew up on Martha’s Vineyard,
Massachusetts, and studied acting at Sweet Briar College, graduating in 1960.
She trained under Stella Adler and made her name on the New York stage before
transitioning to television.
Her early career
included guest roles in Bonanza, Hawaii Five-O, Mannix, and Gunsmoke. She
appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series as Dr. Miranda Jones (Is There in
Truth No Beauty?, 1968) and Dr. Ann Mulhall (Return to Tomorrow, 1968). In 1988,
she joined Star Trek: The Next Generation as Dr. Katherine Pulaski, replacing
Gates McFadden for the second season. She left the show after one season
due the character not fitting in and she was unhappy with the writing on the
show.
Beyond Star Trek, Muldaur starred as
Rosalind Shays in L.A. Law (1989–1991), earning two Emmy nominations. She also
appeared in The Tony Randall Show, Born Free, Matlock, and Murder, She Wrote.
She was the first female president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
(1983–1985).
Muldaur was married twice—to James
Vickery (1969–1979) and Robert Dozier (1981–2012). She retired from acting in
the 1990s and currently resides in California.
