Alexander Siddig, born November 21, 1965, in Omdurman, Sudan, is a British actor
and director best known for portraying Dr. Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine. He has also starred in Game of Thrones, Gotham, and Syriana.
Siddig was born Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abdurrahman Mohammed Ahmed
Abdel Karim El Mahdi and comes from a distinguished lineage—his uncle, Sadiq
al-Mahdi, was the Prime Minister of Sudan, and his great-great-grandfather was
Muhammad Ahmad, a religious leader. His mother, Gloria Taylor, was British and
the sister of actor Malcolm McDowell. Siddig moved to London at age two, where
he later attended St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, and studied at the London
Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
His
acting career began in theater, but his breakthrough came in 1992 when he
starred as Emir Feisal in A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia. This role led
to his casting as Dr. Julian Bashir, the chief medical officer of Deep Space
Nine, in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). He later appeared in Kingdom of
Heaven (2005), Hannibal (2006), Cairo Time (2009), and Inescapable (2012).
Siddig played Prince Doran Martell in Game of
Thrones (2015–2016), Ra’s al Ghul in Gotham (2018), and Philip Burton in
Primeval (2011). He also starred in Shantaram (2022) and directed theater
productions.
Siddig was married to Nana Visitor
(1997–2001), and they have one son, Django El Tahir El Fadil. He later married
Shana Collier in 2015.
